Congratulations to Mary Mansilla, from the Centre for Reproductive Health, for winning first place at the EMBL Australia 2019 PhD Course Poster Presentation.

EMBL Australia is a life science network that supports ambitious research projects and provides access to infrastructure and training to early-career Australian scientists. The prestigious EMBL Australia PhD Course is a two-week intensive research-focused lecture and workshop series held that The University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia from 24 June to 5 July 2019.

“This course was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life! I have learnt so much from expert leaders in scientific research, and created life-long friendships with some of the greatest emerging researchers in both Australia and worldwide,” Mary said.

The poster presentations gave the 60 participating PhD students in the course the opportunity to share their exciting, innovative research in the field of life sciences.

Mary’s poster presentation titled A placenta-specific protein that is critical for placental development was awarded first place and a $300 prize. Her research investigates the importance of a novel protein in the healthy formation of the human placenta.

Mary said, “Similar to how the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, the placenta is the powerhouse of a pregnancy. When normal placental development is disturbed or impaired, it can have grave impacts to both the pregnancy, and the health of mum and baby.”

“I am so delighted to have won first prize! It was such a wonderful experience to share my research at EMBL Australia with some of the brightest minds in life sciences research”, Mary said.
