9th Lorne Infection and Immunity conference 2019

The 9th Lorne Infection and Immunity conference was held at the Cumberland Lorne Resort last week. Co-convened by Professor Paul Hertzog, Associate Institute Director and Head of the Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases, the 2019 meeting had a record-number of abstract submissions and more than 270 delegates.

A highlight of the meeting was a visit by Professor Anne Kelso, CEO of the National Health and Medical Research Council. Prof Kelso spoke to conference delegates about what has been learned so far in implementing the NHMRC’s new grant program, took questions from the audience and credited 'freed-up February' as a factor in increased Lorne meeting attendance across the conference series. As noted in NHMRC Research Tracker, 1857 Investigator Grants were received in the inaugural round, with outcomes expected to be announced in August.

The program featured speakers from the US, UK, Switzerland, Singapore and France, as well as Institute Director and CEO, Professor Elizabeth Hartland, who was an invited speaker on the topic of 'Bacterial infection and cell intrinsic immunity'.

In honour of Prof Hartland’s contribution as co-founder of VIIN and the Lorne Infection and Immunity Conference, the Hartland Oration was established in 2018. Each year, it is delivered by the postdoctoral researcher recognised as giving the best long talk at the Young Investigator Symposium of the Victorian Infection and Immunity Network, of which Liz was co-convenor (2009-2017). Dr Martin Davey of Monash University was the 2019 Hartland Orator and spoke on 'Adaptive immune surveillance by human γδ T cells in microbial infection'.

The Centre for Innate Immunity and Infectious Diseases and Centre for Reproductive Health were well-represented at the conference, with
  • Dr Jaclyn Pearson, Head of the Host-Pathogen Interactions Research Group delivering an oral presentation on 'The Role of RIPK1 in controlling systemic and gastrointestinal bacterial infections'
  • A/Professor Ashley Mansell, Prof Richard Ferrero, Dr Kate Lawlor and Dr Michael Gantier all acting as invited chairs
