Dr Erin McGillick was announced as a semi-finalist in The University of Adelaide STEM Award at the 2018 Channel 9 South Australian Young Achiever Awards in May. She was presented by The Honourable Rachel Sanderson MP, Minister for Child Protection, representing the Premier of South Australia, at a gala event held at Hilton Adelaide.

“It was an honour to be nominated and then selected as a semi-finalist for this award, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities that I was given during my training in South Australia and am proud to share the knowledge and skills that I have gained with others around the country and the world,” Dr McGillick says.

Dr McGillick completed her PhD investigating the role of chronic hypoxia in regulation of fetal lung maturation, towards improved respiratory outcomes for growth restricted newborns at the University of South Australia in Adelaide before joining Professor Stuart Hooper’s laboratory in The Ritchie Centre, Hudson Institute, as a postdoctoral scientist researching mechanisms to improve the transition from fetal to newborn life in complicated pregnancies.

The award recognises Dr McGillick’s recent achievements, including being selected as a Fresh Science Competition finalist and being awarded best presentation at the Fetal and Neonatal Workshop. She has written 16 peer-reviewed publications and received significant funding to undertake research overseas.
