DNA screening, sterile surgery and PhD seminars are all in a day’s work for a group of students undertaking year 10 work
experience at the Ritchie Centre (Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash University).
The group of students, from the John Monash Science School, have been getting a taste of all aspects of life in the lab, as part of
the Ritchie Centre’s work experience program.
The students have watched experiments, attended PhD careers seminars and visited the sleep labs.
PhD student Nadia Bellofiore demonstrated how the spiny mouse colony is used, explaining the process of organising breeding pairs,
weaning offspring, and doing health and pregnancy checks.
Dr James Deane took the group through some hands-on genetic screening work.
