Celebrating the career of Prof Jock Findlay

The Centre for Reproductive Health (CRH) hosted a special event on Wednesday, 11 December to celebrate the career of Professor Jock Findlay, a Hudson Institute distinguished scientist and reproductive health research leader.

Jock is nationally and internationally renowned as an influential advocate for reproductive science, and as a leader in science and medicine.

He is closing his lab at the end of the year, but will continue to be engaged with the CRH and involved in reproductive biology research and advocacy.

Jock was raised on a sheep station near Broken Hill. He studied at the University of Adelaide from 1962–1970, graduating with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science with Honours and a PhD.

He was awarded a Doctor of Science by Monash University in 1997. Jock joined Hudson Institute (then Prince Henry’s Institute) in 1979 and has led the Ovarian Biology Laboratory. He is internationally recognised for his research in reproductive biology, with discoveries about regulation of the ovary and uterus that are important to both animal and human fertility.

“Jock is a wonderful friend, mentor and inspiration to many,” said CRH Centre Head, Professor Kate Loveland.

“He was the first non-North American elected to the Presidency of the Society for Reproductive Biology in the USA, and he continues to advocate for recognition of our discipline nationally, including through the establishment of Reproductive Health Australia.”

Jock received the Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2008, the SSR 2017 Distinguished Service Award, an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Adelaide in 2018, and was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences in 2019.

“We are delighted Jock took time out of his busy schedule of winning awards to help us celebrate this milestone together!” said Prof Loveland.
