Final Score: 19 - 27
Mikee and Tessa arrived to the field of battle with the sun still high in the sky. Saddling their steeds, they made their way over to survey the conditions of the ground. The air was brisk. Laced with a thin fog of cold and fear.
They alone on the centre of the battle field. The weight of the task before them weighed heavy on Mikee’s shoulders. With eyes closed in silent concentration, he breathed a heavy yet determined sigh.
Tessa glanced around in concern.
“Mikee, the sun grows low. Where are the others?” Tessa asked.
“Don’t worry, I’m sure they will arrive in time. Our captain will not abandon us,” Mikee replied, trying to hide the worry in his voice.
Both captain and soldiers were nowhere in sight and his heart began to fill with worry. Had the dread taken hold of his fellow warriors? Was he now alone to defend. Had his captain abandoned them? He could not help but think back on the conversation he and Aidan had had the previous day. They stood in the captain’s study overlooking the battle reports.
“They’re the best in the league my captain, un-beaten. We stand no chance,” Mikee whispered. Aidan could not hide the worry in his gaze.
“They may be unbeatable, but we need not win. Hold our ground and strike with force. If we can stand strong, then we may still live to fight another day,” he replied forcefully.
Mikee looked up. The sun almost gone. Though soldiers Heidi, Eva, Amy, Madi, Maddy and Ash had arrived. Their fearless captain was still unaccounted for.
The group sat, huddled. Unsure of how to proceed without direction. “We may need to fight without him,” Heidi said, breaking the silence.
“We have no choice,” Madi continued. Fellow soldiers nodding in agreement.
Mikee stared into the sky, now black. “We’re out of time. Take your positions. We’re ready."
The heat of battle raged quickly. The team suffering blow after blow. Their confidence and determination never wavered. And to the best of their ability, they returned each attack with a merciless strike. It was not enough and the unparalleled skill of the opponent quickly took the battle from them. When all seemed lost, Mikee spotted a familiar figure off in the distance, image growing clearer with each passing second.
“Oh captain, my captain!” He exclaimed as Aidan rushed the field. They rest of the warriors cheering in celebration. The tides of the battle quickly turned. A wave of spirit washing over them.
The eyes of each soldier burned with determination and hope. They fought back, with a ferocity, the likes of which had never been seen. New found speed and skill had overcome them. Now they delivered blow after blow. They enemy stood stunned in fear, unaware of what they were witnessing.
…it was however, too late. And as admirably as they performed, it was not enough. The battle ended and the enemy rode of in triumph.
But as the team looked around to each other, no frown was placed upon a single face. Instead a smile of beaming pride.
“I apologize for my absence, but that was amazing,” Aidan said, also beaming with pride. “Next time, victory will be ours."
And it will. Defeat after defeat has not discouraged our heroes. Instead in them a newfound hope and pride. Pride in themselves. Pride in the team.
They live to fight another day and victory will be theirs!
