CEM awards recognise excellence in bone disease, cardiovascular research

Dr Jasna Aleksova
Three scientists from the Centre for Endocrinology and Metabolism have been recognised for their research into bone disease and cardiovascular health.

Clinical Associate Professor Fran Milat has been awarded the Endocrine Society of Australia (ESA) Mid-Career Award.

The award acknowledges her leadership in the study of metabolic bone disease particularly in underserved populations as head of the Metabolic Bone Disease Group as well as the Metabolic Bone Disease Service at Monash Health.

A/Prof Milat will present a 20-minute lecture at the ESA’s Annual Scientific Meeting in Perth in August.

Physician-scientist Dr Jimmy Shen was awarded the ESA’s $1000 Servier Young Investigator Award, which will enable him to travel to Perth to present his work on the role of the mineralocortoid receptor in cardiac tissue injury.

Meanwhile, PhD student Dr Jasna Aleksova has been awarded the 2017 Professor Philip Sambrook Young Investigator Travel Award by Osteoporosis Australia.

The $10,000 award acknowledges her work on the impacts of kidney dialysis on bone health, a joint study with Professor Peter Kerr and the Nephrology Unit of Monash Health.

Dr Aleksova, who is jointly supervised by Prof Rob McLachlan and A/Prof Fran Milat, will present her findings at the American Society of Bone and Mineral Research annual meeting in Denver, USA, in September, and in Brisbane in June.
